Godzilla x Kong: There Is Room In Hollywood For Chaotic Monster Bullshit That’s Fun

From The Start: Initial Thoughts

This movie is everything I expected and wanted it to be, absolute mayhem that feels like any shit goes. I wouldn’t have batted an eye if someone through a pyramid at each other. Shit, Godzilla even brought Kong to suplex city just cause this man stepped on Earth. You know how savage you gotta be to try to kill an old friend just cause he walked into your hood? Godzilla feels like the larger than life character that comes in and shows out when shit really hits the fan, while the story is mainly a Kong story through and through, which is really fun to let the lore expand and give us some wild backstory that surprisingly works! The villians are refreshing and make for a really fun build to the final act and climax. They also ramped up the Titan fighting and I am HERE FOR IT. Godzilla and Kong just obliterating other titans and creatures is not something I take for granted.

Godzilla Studies Abroad

I have to start this blog out with one of my favorite aspects of the movie. Godzilla just bouncing around Europe fighting titans and charging up nuclear energy to eventually evolve. The fact it’s just like random European cities he is hitting like he is studying abroad made me laugh out loud every single time the new city card popped up on the screen with Godzilla in the background. Could you imagine you have all these plans on an itinerary to have a great time in France and boom day before all this shit is wrecked cause Godzilla heard some other titan’s footsteps. Trip ruined.

In all seriousness though I loved this build. I know it had a purpose of Godzilla garnering nuclear energy but Kong was out there on a journey to uncharted territories in Hollow Earth to discover important information about an ancient war. Godzilla just out there basically hitting the meanest workout you can imagine for a Titan and Kong is having a rough time, which makes it even funnier when Kong is physically trying drag Godzilla to Hollow Earth to help him since he knows it’s on site if Godzilla sees Shimu. which now brings me to my next point, the villians.

Vengeful Monkey and Pet Dragon Titan

The introduction of Scar King had a lot to live up to from prior movies. The reveal of King Ghidorah was insane. MechaGodzilla showing up had me ready to stand on my seat in the theatre. While we had seen Scar King in promos, the way he walked off his thrown and hit a mean shoulder lean while looking Kong up and down before making fun of his fixed tooth was not what I was expecting and I am so happy it wasn’t just “angry giant monkey that is threatened by other monkey.” He had some swagger to him. Even had a sexy point of the crystal when he unleashed the titan Shimu under his control to try to kill Kong. Also him riding Shimu on the way out his cave kingdom felt very menacing and diabolical I loved it.

Shimu looks almost like an innocent titan that didn’t want to be fighting but had to under Scar King’s control. However, he is a force. He is massive, much bigger than Godzilla, and turned Kong’s wrist into a popsicle that Mr Freeze would have been proud of. I had a feeling his control would be relinquished at some point and would have an assist in the end of Scar King. Up until then though, you never truly knew what damage he was going to do since he was so capable with the ice beam. The legend of him being the reason for the first ice age was an amazing little ripple of lore that I thoroughly enjoyed. Give me ridiculous explanations for real world events. Why the fuck not.

Infinity Gauntlet Kong and the Final Battle

The installment of the mechanical glove on Kong resembled an infinity gauntlet almost so much I think it was borderline intentional. Kong was near unstoppable in hand to hand combat with that gauntlet on. That moment was when I knew the final battle would be batshit, and it sure delivered. The gravity was lifted, titans are fighting throughout the sky of hollow earth, Mothra is getting in on the action, just insanity at its highest level when it comes to titans fighting in this franchise. Eventually they get sucked up to Earth and the scale of the titans fighting is on full force. I

t will take decades for Brazil to recover from Kong and Scar King throwing buildings at each other and Godzilla and Shimu’s beats destroying everything else left standing that wasn’t thrown by the giant monkeys. Even the small monkey is a giant on Earth and that was dope to see him help with the downfall of the crystal.

Godzilla the Goat

I can go on and on about how amazing this evolved form of Godzilla looks. I love the blue accent he gets in other films but this pink felt like he hit a next level super saiyan and was not able to be fucked with. Story old as time, that no titan stands any fucking chance against this God Lizard. To say I love Godzilla and he is the reason I get so hyped for these films is an understatement. His presence on screen just means more. You can have a whole story going with Kong like they did and anytime Godzilla steps on it feels different and you know shit is about to go down. Obviously him and Kong work great together and compliment each other but this man Godzilla spamming the atomic breath was amazing and just showed he can solo any Titan he wants while defending his turf. As long as Godzilla is fucking shit up, I will continue to see these movies on release day.

Final Thoughts

I hope they just continue to add to the Monsterverse, I am curious where they go from here though. They teased Destroyah on one of the maps of titans and that would be an amazing monster to bring to the modern screen. I wonder how Kong would factor into that story. Or they can go full on madness and bring us Space Godzilla, which would be absolutely insane getting an Alien Godzilla with today’s effects.

I thought this movie was exactly what it wanted to be and strived to be. Shit ton of monster fighting and destruction with a little bit of backstory and legendary war sprinkled in to give it flavor, but I loved the increase in fights, titans, and overall expansion of Hollow Earth. Kong has a whole army behind him now, Godzilla is an army of one, I can’t wait to see who tests these two next or if they branch back off to do solo films without one another maybe.
