THE FILM THAT REENERGIZED REQUELS
While I know this film has been out for 6 years, every Halloween season I look forward to getting big Michael Myers back on the big screen. There is something about seeing him put that mask back on, and getting to hear that music again on the big screen that just gets you wound up. It’s easily the best of the modern trilogy, and feels very grounded in the Halloween universe with its own twist. A raging Jamie Lee Curtis just awaiting her future face off with Myers since she has spent her whole life paranoid as fuck. The cast is tremendous in this as well. Anything with Judy Greer I am down to see. The casting of the sheriff, doctor, and the young daughter were the perfect choices for this Requel to be successful.
THE COMEBACK OF THE CLASSICS
Michael Myers first kill being a little boy was a BOLD choice. This let you know how damn brutal and serious this man is about his murders. Killing what is in his way. The bathroom kill is brutal as fuck, as well as the reveal of the teeth he smashed in at the gas station. This is a more sinister and dangerous being we get to see 40 years later. The podcasters never stood a chance. Only Laurie Strode coming back as his enemy stood a chance. The score they came back with also is incredible. We get the classic Halloween theme, but also several iterations of it that gave me fucking chills throughout. My favorite being after he killed Oscar in the backyard and is chasing Allyson in the neighborhood as she screams for help. Just chilling shit we get in this return to form for Michael.
The best sequence of the entire film is the one shot sequence where he is walking through houses on Halloween night. It’s incredible done and it’s Michael’s return to what he does best. Terrorizing people on the best holiday.
Ongoing Family Drama
While many did not like this aspect, I enjoyed the drama dynamic going on between Laurie and Karen, dating back to her childhood. As well as the connection between Allyson and Laurie. It makes you really appreciate the Strode Final Girls coming together in the climax of the film. While Karen does not think her mother should be paranoid as she is, she soon realizes how wrong she is and how there is a real threat in Myers after his escape. I personally love the development and growth of the family relationships throughout. It’s well acted and these feel like believable conversations, even when Laurie is acting bat shit crazy.
The Big Moments
The pending arrival of Michael Myers at Laurie’s “compound” is what all this work throughout this return is for. The faceoff. It doesn’t disappoint. The scene of Myers standing in the house while they are below ground as the theme ramps up to a 1000 is what dreams are made of. The compound and basement being a trap is genius. There are many traps throughout to funnel him there and honestly an extremely well thought out design that makes you feel like you’re in the house. They trick Myers and finally drop him into the trap where flames engulf him. The final girl sequence is fulfilling too with them embracing like they did it. Only to hear one last breath from Myers to let us know he has more killing to do.
