RADIO SILENCE AND SAMARA WEAVING. MATCH MADE IN HEAVEN
I know Samara Weaving has work before this film, but this was her big showcase for me. I remember seeing the picture of her covered in blood smoking a cigarette and saying to myself I HAVE to see this film. You could not cast a better innocent girl that doesn’t know what she is getting into, turned badass by the end of the film than Samara. With that being said, the whole cast is extremely well placed. Adam Brody plays his character to perfection, Mark O’Brien does a great job showing how he feels guilty for all this but loves her, before switching up at the end. The father and mother are exactly what you would hope for to make sure this all is being done by the rules. The sister Emilie being a druggy that keeps fucking up was genuinely one of the funnier horror movie characters I have ever seen. Fuck she is funny as hell in this.
THE PLOT THICKENS BUT KEEPS YOU LOCKED IN
The family game of Hide N Seek needing to be played to kill her otherwise they all would die is something all of us could have guessed after the opening flashback. However the movie still tries to throw enough turns in there to keep you engaged and thinking about if she actually would make it out, or if they’d actually be punished for failing. The help kept dying off on accident which was hysterical. The butler ends up being an integral role, Adam Brody’s character continuously looks like he is conflicted, while the chase is all going on and leading to great character interactions throughout. I did not foresee Alex turning on her to be captured at the end, but the genius slide over to be able to steal the knife as the sun rose to reveal to us what would happen.
UNIQUE FILMS ARE NEEDED IN HOLLYWOOD
This is a plot that you can guess, but it’s unique and bold and really leans on its excellent casting. The movie being facilitated by all the different personalities feels like if everyone from Clue just tried to kill one person and chaos ensued. Speaking of chaos. I was shocked nothing happened at first when the sun came up. Thinking oh shit this all was for nothing and they never needed to sacrifice anyone ever. Then the Big Bang’s started, and my god were they big and bloody. The one of Emilie and her kids running out was my favorite. Just further cementing her as my favorite character outside Grace. I can only wonder if she ended up with all the money since she was the last remaining member of the family. Since she god to tell Alex to fuck off after he turned on her right before his body exploded all over her. I really can’t wait to see what route they go with Ready or Not 2 with Samara at the lead again.
